Una Incertidumbre

In Spanish, “una incertidumbre” means “an uncertainty.” This “uncertainty” became my reality on New Year’s Day of 2021 when I learned that my grandmother, who lived in Panama, had contracted COVID-19 and would ultimately never return home. At that time, the COVID vaccine was still in development and had not yet been distributed worldwide. The three weeks of uncertainty about whether I would see her again, combined with a complete lack of communication, became the painful fuel that inspired this piece. In the middle of this work, I used a Panamanian folk theme, “Calla Pajarito Calla,” as a celebration of life and a tribute to my grandmother’s wisdom and memory. I’d like to thank the Amorsima Trio for performing this piece and acknowledge anyone who has lost a loved one to this virus during a time of isolation and uncertainty.
